HDR Test: Photomatix

I recently downloaded and installed the trial of the NIK HDR Efex plug-in for Photoshop CS5. I saw some good stuff in the online demonstration and wanted to check out how it worked with my workflow and technique (or lack thereof).

I was especially interested in alignment and de-ghosting features, since I am lazy and don't always use a tripod, and there is usually a breeze where I live.

I am not testing the ability to create an HDR; that takes time and practice, which I don't have yet with HDR Efex Pro, so that wouldn't really be fair.

Photomatix has a manual de-ghost feature and aligns hand-held shots pretty well. In this shot there is some ghosting left, but this would be easy enough to clean up in Photoshop. I shop almost all of my HDR work anyway, so this is okay, and I doubt that it would be noticeable on a busier background.

Dad was kind enough to drive me all the way to Ocala for a photohunt. On just two streets we found a wealth of midcentury goodies -- it was like going back in time.
